Additional Information: | This study demonstrates the neuroprotective potential of D.hamiltonii. Because failure to cope with oxidative stress is common factor in the aetiology of many diseases DHA’s effects on the improvement of the antioxidant response could provide an explanation for the health promoting properties attributed to it. The role of free radical mediated oxidative injury in acute insults to the nervous system including stroke or trauma, as well as in chronic neurodegenerative disorders, is being just recognized. Tackling free radical offers a novel therapeutic target in such diseases. However, only when the mechanisms and involvement of free radicals in the pathogenesis of neurodegeneration as well as neurological and CNS diseases are understood, will approaches to antioxidant therapy be designed effectively and targeted. |
