Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Spirulina, Chlorella and Nostoc are well known microalgae. The strains of these algae are suitable for exploration of agriculture, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics products. The strains of Chlorella and Spirulina are rich in protein and also contain Carotenoids, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids and Nostoc is known for nitrogen fixation. Vitamin b12 deficiency is a major problem among vegetarian populations. There fore the present study has a direct relevance. These micro algae are also rich sources of pigments such as phycobiliproteins-phycocyanin, phycoerythrin and allophycocyanin, b- carotene, lutien. These pigments are used as colorants in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Spirulina also contains GLA (gamma linolenic acid) a known precursor for prostaglandin.
