Additional Information: | Present and future trends in the field of probiotics and different aspects such as characteristics, mode of action, criteria for selection of probiotics, viability, stability and safety of probiotics and also on Prebiotics and Synbiotics are studied. The establishment of scientifically confirmed evidence of “functional” effects related to pre-, pro-, and synbiotics presents a tremendous challenge to interdisciplinary scientific research. More than a century has passed since the early scientific observations and careful reporting, with increased research efforts and continuous development of new and improved hypotheses in the last two decades. The important role of the intestinal flora in the maintenance of health and in the prevention of disease is well recognized and acknowledged. The major challenge concerns the development and validation of in vivo and in vitro test models. Significant progress has been made in recent years in conducting placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical studies, for which important functional effects could be verified. Yet, both for pre- and probiotics, a number of postulated effects still need to be confirmed .For Prebiotics, studies may particularly be directed toward their influence on blood serum cholesterol values. The use of probiotics in different diseases or conditions is attractive. However, there are still many questions to be answered before probiotics can be used routinely as therapy. Studies in humans have to prove the efficacy of different species, the conditions for their use, the optimal administration route and the formulation. The right probiotics should be suitable from a microbiological and clinical perspective, and proper use can only be attempted with the strict co-operation of microbiologists and physicians |
