Abstract

Omega-3 (ω-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have gained academic and industrial interest due to their multiple health benefits. Currently, marine fish is the major commercial source of DHA (an important ω-3 fatty acid) for human consumption. However, there has been rising concern about fish utilization due to declining fish stock, heavy metal toxicity, and inconsistency in fatty acid content. The rising global demand for ω-3 fatty acid and decreased sustainability of fish sources calls for exploring alternative sources. Marine microalgae are the primary producers of ω-3 fatty acids and are emerging as a promising alternative source of ω-3 fatty acids. Aurantiochytrium limacinum is a marine protist and accumulates considerably high amounts of DHA. A. limacinum, therefore, is a good model for studying DHA metabolic pathway. A better understanding of DHA accumulating enzymes will help us identify potential gene targets to make genetically engineered sources of DHA. Hence, the present study aims to understand the role of Acyl-CoA: Diacylglycerol Acyltransferase in the accumulation of LC-PUFA acid in A. limacinum.
