Abstract
The marine fish oil obtained during fishmeal production and shrimp shells through whole shrimp processing have less commercial importance, mostly considered as waste and are disposed to environment resulting in pollution. The current research focuses on exploiting fish industry wastes such as Fenneropenaeus indicus shrimp shell and marine fishmeal industry (MFMI) oil with a perspective of achieving sustainable biodiesel production and overcome disposal pollution issues. The physicochemical properties of MFMI oil indicated its suitability to be used as feedstock for biodiesel production. The catalyst characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis revealed that calcination of shrimp shells resulted in the formation of crystalline mesoporous solid catalyst primarily composed of CaO. As per the central composite design of response surface methodology, the maximum biodiesel yield of 86.56wt% was obtained from MFMI oil at an oil to methanol molar ratio of 1:12 (mol/ mol), catalyst concentration of 5 wt% of oil, reaction temperature of 65 °C, and reaction time of 120 min. Further, based on flask level optimized condition, the biodiesel production was scaled to a 50 L oil volume batch and achieved a good yield of 88.74 wt%. Further, the physicochemical properties and cold flow property of MFMI oil biodiesel ensured its application as fuel. Thus, MFMI oil and calcined shrimp shell catalyst could be utilized as promising feedstock and catalyst for sustainable biodiesel production.
