Abstract

The relative performance of 2 imported SO2 release systems [i) slow release and (ii) quick release) and 2 in-package fumigants [iii) slow release and (iv) slow plus quick release) was studied under different packaging conditions, i.e. 4 kg corrugated fibre board (CFB) containers lined with unventilated LDPE film, ventilated LDPE, or laminated polycoated paper and a conventional CFB box. Their influence on quality of Tash Ganesh grapes was studied during March/April 1984 season when grapes were transported for 4 days over 1400 km by truck and by train and then subjected to physical, chemical and sensory analysis. Results are tabulated. These show that soluble solids content and acidity were not affected by SO2 treatment. The conventional package gave significantly better results for quality of grapes (taste and aroma) than the LDPE unventilated liners. In conventional packaging both (iii) and (iv) gave comparable results since differences in aroma, taste and after-taste were negligible. It is concluded that (iv) can be used in place of imported slow release system in conventional packaging systems.
