Abstract

The main requirements for sound storage of food grains are that their moisture content should be below 11 per cent and that they should be free from internal infestation. Grain storage structure should therefore have (1) low thermal conductivity to prevent moisture condensation in stored grain, (2) gas-wortruue36 for fumigant retention, (3) resistance to rodent and termite attack, and (4) resistance to cross-infestation by insects. A comparative evaluation of plywood, ferrocement and high molecular weight high density polyethylene bins of capacity O. 5 to 3 tonnes showed that the plywood and ferrocement bins meet these requirements both for indoor and outdoor storage of grains. Plywood bins are however, easier to transport and erect, and more economical. Metal bins which are suitable for indoor storage are more expensive than plywood bins. High molecular weight high density polyethylene bins are cheap, light, easy to transport, load and unload. However, their durability is limited and they require frequent anti-rodent treatment. A multi-purpose knock-down type unitised panel structure which was also evaluated for bulk or bag storage of grain was found to be promising.
