Abstract
Several measures are taken to control the coffee bean weevil Araecerus fasciculatus during storage of coffee seeds. Fumigation of coffee using aluminium phosphide (AIP) tablets is permitted at 3-4 tablets/t in Brazil. In order to understand reasons for differential responses by different coffee spp., implications of fumigating Robusta and Arabica coffee beans with a dose of 3 AIP tablets/t (which release PH3 gas) was investigated. Results showed that Robusta coffee beans on fumigation had a higher PH3 holding capacity and held a higher free PH3 residue than Arabica. Robusta with a higher residue desorbed larger amounts of PH3 than Arabica. Preliminary work with the wax of Robusta coffee suggested differences in method of PH3 retention by the coffee bean and its wax. Oxidation of PH3 in these coffee spp. is predominant.
