Abstract

Several harmless chemical solutions were screened to study the comparative removal of lindane, BHC and X-factor from fruits and vegetables, keeping in view that the decontaminating agent should not affect the natural colour, odour and texture of the material. Further they should be cheap and indigenously available. The chemical solutions studied were as follows: cold water wash, hot water wash (8OOC). 2% acetic acid in water, 2% detergent solution, 2% sodium bicarbonate solution, a solution mixture containing 0.5 potassium permanganate and 0.5% sodium bicarbonate and 1% ethanol. The results revealed that washing in cold and hot water was not able to remove much of lindane, BHC and X-factor. However, washing the fruit. and vegetables in sodium bicarabonate solution significantly lowered the residue. The removal of lindane was more in grapes, followed by X.factor and BHC when washed in different chemical solutions. It was observed that the degree of removal of lindane, BHC and X-factor varied from one vegetable to another depending upon the nature of the surface material and magnitude of the waxy layer present on the vegetables. The lowering of lindane, BHC and X-factor was less In cabbage, cauliflower, palak and lady's finger and more in beanS, brinjal.and the maximum being, in tomato with all the chemical solutions tried. It may be concluded that the degree of removal was more in lindane, less in X-factor and the least in BHe in all the vegetables when washed in different chemical solutions.
