Abstract
Pineapples of the 'Oueen' var. were packed in bamboo baskets (20 x 14 x 14 in baskets each containing 30-35 fruits) and transported for 41/2 days by lorry from Agarthala to Calcutta in June 1977. The stem-end of the fruit was treated with (i) benzoic acid (0.1 g%) with inert Kaolin (1:4) or (ii) benzoic acid in alcoholic solution (2.5% benzoic acid solution in 30% alcohol). At the end of transportation, spoilage due to stem end rot was 5.0 and 9.2% in fruits treated with (i) and (ii) resp. and 34.3% in control. Lateral rot was not controlled by benzoic acid. The cost of treating 10 000 fruit (one lorry load) is estimated as 14 Rupees and one kg of the blended dust is sufficient for the treatment.
