Abstract

The effect of acute vitamin A deficiency on intestinal lipids of the rat was studied. The e){tent of incorporation of labelled sulfate (Na/'S04) into the lipids and the glycolipid fraction obtained by silicic acid chromatography was also measured. A significant decrease in total lipids of intestines was observed. Fractionation of the lipids by silicic acid chromatography showed i) a significant decrease in the triglyceride content and an increase in free cholesterol and free fatty acids; (2) the incorporation of 35S into the intestinal lipids of the vitamin A deficient group was greater than in the vitamin A supplemented controls.
