Abstract

Works carried out with respect to cultured shrimp and shrimp culture environs have revealed that Salmonella, Vibrio spp. and Listeria spp could be part of the natural flora of cultured shrimp and shrimp culture environs. The review emphasizes the need for judicious ways of shrimp culture to avoid higher load of these pathogens. It becomes imperative that cultured shrimps need to be treated under a separate category and hence separate set of standards have to be set by the importing countries instead of using the yardstick of wild shrimps. This might also help in avoiding the high risk of cross contamination of wild shrimps and/or any other seafood by the cultured shrimps. It is hoped that this review will open up new areas of thinking to enable the regulatory agencies to promulgate standards for safe aquaculture produce especially those originating from shrimp culture.
