Abstract

An isolate of Bacillus iicheniformis obtained from soil when grown in a liquid medium produced an amylase that was thermostable and active at acidic pH. Partially purified enzyme was inhibited by calcium ions. The enzyme was inhibited by magnesium to a lesser extent. The inhibition increased with temperature and concentration of calcium. Binding calcium with EDTA restored most of the enzyme activity.
