Abstract

A mixture of vegetable and mineral oils carrying Technical Deltamethrin at 0.15% concentration DUROL was developed for treating the jute bags to control stored product insects. Besides studying its physico-chemical properties. this formulation was sprayed at the rate of 30 mg/m2 on jute, cement, and wooden surfaces. The insecticidal efficacy of DUROL" was compared with Tech. malathion at 2.5% carried in the same mixture of oil sprayed at 500 mg/ m2 was tested against Sitophilus oryzae and Tribolium castaneum. The result indicated that Durol effected 100% mortality in Sitophl1us oryzae upto 60 days on jute surface. At the end of 90 days insect mortality was 80%. However, it resulted in 100% mortality on cement and wooden surfaces at the end of 30 days. It declined to 70 and 40 at the end of 90 days respectively in the case of Sitophilus oryzae. However. Tribalium castaneum was less susceptible. At the end of 60 days, only 60% mortality was obtained on cement and wooden surfaces and was reduced to 40 and 50% respectively. The mortality of Sitophl1us oryzae ranged from 40 to 60% only with malathion formulation at the end of 30 days while there was not much difference at 60 days (30% to 40%) and it was very much reduced at the end of 90 days on all surfaces. Malathion induced a very low mortality (1 0 to 26%) at the end of 30 days while it was 0 to 10% at 60 and 90 days in case of Tribolium castaneum. The carrier oil mix was not toxic to both insect species .
