Abstract

In Nagpur, sour rot caused greater than 60% wastage in Mandarin oranges (Citrus reticulata Blanco). Calixin (1000 p.p.m.) and Benlate 50 (0.1%) with and without wax emulsion were tested on these oranges packed in ventilated wooden cases provided with cushioning pads. Calixin at 1000 p.p.m. and Benlate-50 at 0.1% in 5% wax emulsion lowered the spoilage from 63 to 6% in Ambia Bahar (Oct.-Jan.) crop during 20 days storage period. For Mrig Bahar (Feb.-May) crop when oranges were dipped for 2 min in Calixin of 1000, 3000 and 5000 p.p.m. concn. along with 0.1% Benlate-50, the wastage was reduced to 1.33% and the fruits remained marketable up to 21 days of storage. Besides sour rot the spoilage caused by other organisms have also been listed and the extent of loss incurred after treating with Calixin (1000 p.p.m.) and Benlate-50 (0.1%) separately have been given.
