Abstract

Cow's milk and infant foods based on cow's milk, are commonly used in the feeding of infants and young children in Western countries. In India and Egypt, buffalo milk is also being used along with cow's milk for this purpose. For infants with poor digestive capacities or suffering from intestinal disorders, partially skimmed milk and milk foods are usually used.! In addition to milk, infants are also given supplements of fruit juice and fruit pulp. Fruits are good sources of vitamin C. Besides, there is some evidence to showthat the organic acids present in fruit juices may help to form a finer curd from the milk and thereby help in better digestion of the proteins. EBERHARD and BOWER observed that "administration of orange juice resulted in an increase in the free and total acidity in the stomach. Some fruits e.g., banana and apple have been found to be useful in the treatment of diarrhoea in infants and children. It would appear from the results of investigations mentioned above that incorporation of fruit juice powders in milk foods may help in modifying the curd formed from the milk and hence in the better digestion andutilisation of the foods by infants. Such foods may also be useful for feeding infants having digestive disorders. In the present investit;ation, the effect of feeding half cream or low fat milk foods containing mango or banana fruit pulp powder on the growth and general health of infants has been studied.
