Abstract

The method developed for detn. of quinine in soft drinks is based on extraction of the 1:2 complex formed between quinine and alizarin brilliant violet R into chloroform at pH 1.0. The bluish-violet complex in chloroform showed max. absorbance at 578 nm. Beer's law is obeyed over a concn. range of 1.0-16 mug/ml, with a recovery of quinine in soft drinks of 98.6-100.2%, s.d. of plus/minus0.35. The method is sensitive and can be applied in the presence of other food additives.
