Abstract

In continuation of previous work [see preceding abstr.], ability of various cultures of Str. fradiae strain SCF-5 (grown on hydrolysed wheat bran) to produce glucose isomerase was studied. More glucose isomerase was produced on wheat bran than on pure xylose when both media contained identical amounts of pentose. Chromatographic studies indicated that the better induction of glucose isomerase on hydrolysed wheat bran is due to the presence of a xylooligosaccharide or a combination of sugars rather than to xylose itself. Further studies confirmed this assumption.
