Abstract

The supplementary value of a processed protein food (Indian Multipurpose food - MPF) based on 3:1 blend of peanut and chickpea flours and fortified with vitamins and minerals to poor Indian ragi and rice diets under restricted and adequate calorie intakes has been studied by growth expt. in rats. The mean weekly increase in body wt. of rats due to addition of 0.8 g MPF/day/rat was 4.7 g on an adequate ragi diet and 4.0 g on a rice diet. This was reduced to 3.8 g and 2.7 g on a ragi diet and 2.1 g and 1.3 g on a rice diet when calorie intakes were restricted to 75% and 50% respectively. Results indicate that MPF exerts significant supplementary value when calorie intake is restricted to 75% but only a slight effect when restricted to 50%.
