Abstract
A spectrophotometricmethod for measuring aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 in peanuts is described. The sample extracts were freed from fat and pigments by a 3-stage purification which included partition of the toxin between petroleum ether and waterand passing the extract through 2 alumina beds. Total aflatoxins in the purified extract were measured by absorption at 360 nm. The procedure for the quantitative estimation of the 4 individual toxins was based on the separation of aflatoxins G1 and G2 from B1 and B2 by adsorption on an alumina column and the destruction of B1 and G1 by HNO3. Recoveries of aflatoxins B1 and G1 added to commercial peanut samples were good.
