Abstract

Coffee production and productivity in India using different cropping systems is described. Indian coffee cultivation is based on a mixed cropping system under forest ecology. Among the topics highlighted are: chemical fertilizers and an integrated plant nutrient system; alternative strategies to ensure sustainable agriculture; the use of microbial inoculants; rhizospheres; and studies on microbial inoculants (Azotobacter, Azopirillium, fungi and heterotropic microorganisms). It is concluded that integrated nutrition management in coffee farming systems requires an understanding and integration of the biological, chemical and physical components of soil. Exploration of the coffee ecosystem for the natural biodiversity of soil microorganisms and the optimization/manipulation of microbial interactions in the rhizosphere of coffee plants is a prerequisite to develop more efficient microbial inoculants for coffee.
