Abstract

Aspergillus niger CFTRI 6, isolated from soil, produced 5.5 g citric acid/kg wheat bran (WB) in a solid state fermentation system involving basal WB medium compared with 16.3 g/l fermentation broth in a fermentation process. The % sugar conversion was calculated to be 6.8 in solid state fermentation, indicating that titres and yield are poor from an industrial point of view. The culture required additional nitrogen, carbon and phosphate for enhanced production of citric acid by solid state fermentation. Incorporation of 3% methanol in WB medium improved citric acid production significantly. Enrichment of WB medium with sucrose, methanol, NH4NO3 and KH2PO4 resulted in a 13.1x increase of citric acid production compared with basal WB medium, though the % sugar conversion was low (32.8). Data indicate a high potential of Aspergillus niger CFTRI 6 for citric acid production in solid state fermentation systems. [From En summ.]
