Abstract
Fermentative production of 6-pentyl-alpha-pyrone, a lactone with a characteristic coconut aroma, by Trichoderma viride is described. Concn. of 6-pentyl-alpha-pyrone reached a maximum of 90-110 p.p.m. after 120 h of fermentation when it showed an inhibitory effect causing no further production of the alpha-pyrone. Use of Amberlite XAD-2 for alleviating end-product inhibition was investigated. Addition of Amberlite XAD-2 at the start of fermentation effectively overcame product inhibition and led to a marked increase in yield of 6-pentyl-alpha-pyrone.
