Abstract

Aspects covered by the review include: composition and evaluation of finished plastics material intended for food contact; standards and regulations for food packaging plastics; tests for toxicity, including extraction and global migration tests; some ambiguities observed in specification and test methodology; and the parameters to be observed while assessing the safety of plastics. A statement is also given relating to the survey report on plastics packaging materials for food contact applications conducted by the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre, Lucknow, India, during 1983-87.
