Abstract

Potential application of chitin and chitosan from shellfish wastes in environmentally friendly packaging materials is reviewed with reference to: importance of packaging material properties for storage of foods; plastics and pollution (handling of post-consumer plastics wastes by landfill, incineration, depolymerization and recycling, ecological issues); biodegradable polymers as packaging materials (polymers produced from lactic acid, polymers produced by microorganisms, polysaccharides of animal origin, such as chitin/chitosan from shellfish wastes); and characteristics of chitin/chitosan (sources, isolation, properties, and potential applications in waste/effluent purification, paper finishing, solid-state batteries, cosmetics, control of enzymic browning in fruits, clarification and deacidification of fruit juices, packaging films, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and antimicrobial agents).
