Abstract

The repellent and knock-down (KD) properties of pyrethrins obtained from 3-week-old leaf callus cultures of Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium [Tanacetum cinerariifolium] and naturally derived standards were compared. With 3-day-old female Culex quinquefasciatus, the time taken for 50% repellency was the same in callus prepared samples and the standard. The standard was slightly superior in achieving 95% repellency. The time taken for 95% repellency and KD was the same for each extract, indicating a correlation between the upper limits of repellency and KD. KD insects did not recover within 24 h. Extracts applied at 1 ppm to wheat grain exhibited similar repellency to 2- to 3-week-old Tribolium castaneum. The chemical parameter important for biological activity, the pyrethrin I/II ratio was approximately the same in the standard and extract (1.44 and 1.48, respectively).
