Abstract

The disinfestation of food commodities (against, e.g. Tribolium castaneum, Sitophilus oryzae and Trogoderma granarium) using controlled atmospheres is discussed. Simple methods for on-site generation of carbon dioxide (80%) based on the reaction of locally available limestone and dilute hydrochloric acid are described, and techniques for using the CO2 generated for insect control in small metallic or moulded plastic storage containers (less than one tonne capacity) filled with food commodities are enumerated. Treatment in similar structures from commercial cylinders of CO2 (95% purity) is included for comparison and an account of a successful pilot scale controlled atmosphere disinfestation of bagged food materials under woven polyethylene with laminations on each side is given.
