Abstract
Fumigation trials were carried out to find the minimum effective dosages of methyl bromide required for about 37 stored products at 27 plus or minus 2 deg C and 40-85% RH, with adults of Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.) and third-instar larvae of Trogoderma granarium Everts as the test insects. The fumigant concentrations were noted after 0.5, 2, 4, 7 and 24 h, concentration-time curves were drawn for each commodity and integrated CT products were determined. For treatment for a period of 24 h, the stored grain (except rice), pulses (except cowpea [Vigna unguiculata]), oilseeds, spices, rice bran and poultry feed required a minimum dosage of 16 mg/litre; milled cereals required 24-32 mg/litre; for pulse cakes products, oil cakes and fish meal, the effective range was 32-64 mg/litre. Fish meal and greengram [Vigna] splits were the most sorptive commodities tested; the CT products were 112 mg.h/litre for the former when exposed to 48 mg methyl bromide/litre and 106 mg.h/litre for the latter at 64 mg/litre. Tamarind pulp was the least sorptive commodity and required only 8 mg/litre to yield the required CT product.
