Abstract

Groups of 10 male Wistar-CFT rats were given a low-residue diet without or with 10% cellulose, agar-agar or pectin. Some were given Pirimiphos-methyl, an organophosphorus insecticide, 200 mg/kg bodyweight daily by tube for 14 days. The overall toxicity of the insecticide as estimated by bodyweight gain, general signs and activity of brain and plasma cholinesterases and hepatic non-specific carboxylesterase, was less in rats given fibre than in those not given it. The degree of inhibition of esterase activities was least in rats given 10% pectin.
