Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: One of the high growth areas in fermentation technology is the search for new biological molecules from microbial sources since natural products are an excellent source of chemical structures with a wide variety of biological activities. Besides antibiotics, some of the bioactive molecules include, mammalian enzyme inhibitors, mycotoxins, herbicides, insecticides etc. one such group of bioactive metabolites produced by fermentation is low molecular weight enzyme inhibitors. Aldose reductase is a rate-limiting enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of glucose to sorbitol with concomitant conversion of NADPH to NADP+. Inhibition of aldose reductase is thought to be a way of avoiding the complications of diabetes, the search for inhibitors of this enzyme has become an important pharmaceutical goal. A trial has been made to screen and produce an inhibitor of Aldose reductase from some microbial source. The present work deals with the screening and selection of microbial cultures for the effective production of Aldose reductase inhibitors. Isolation of these cultures and fermentation is carried out. Further it is purified by thin layer and column chromatography with different solvent ratios. The purity of the crude and purified compound is determined by HPLC and purified crystals are observed under Light Microscopy.
