Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Thesis (Masters)
Additional Information: Packaging has evolved a lot from Paleolithic time to this present time, it has seen a lot in its journey of evolution from leaves, shells to biodegradable plastics and nanocomposites. But, it was only few decades back when it is growing at an exponential rate. Earlier it was used just to contain, protect and preserve the food but now it is also used to communicate, display, motivate, promote and glamorize. Presently, plastics are the soul for packaging and it seems hard to imagine packaging without it. Plastics are being used as packaging materials for almost all types of foods. The principal families of plastics in food packaging are the polyolefins, polystyrenes, polyesters, nylons, polycarbonates and vinyl polymers. Modern food packaging no longer has just a passive role in protecting and marketing the product now it is playing an active role in processing, preservation and in retaining the safety and quality of foods throughout the distribution chain. To meet the varied demands, innovative modified-atmosphere packaging, and active and intelligent packaging systems are being developed, tested and optimized in laboratories around the world. These novel techniques are getting immense attention due to their potential to ensure safety and quality of product without any additives or preservatives. Currently, MAP, vacuum packaging, active and intelligent packaging systems are getting top priority for ongoing research activities.
