Abstract

Bixa orellana Linn (Fam. Bixaceae) is the only source of the apocarotenoid bixin - that produced at the aril portions of the seeds, which finds extensive use in various food formulations and cosmetics. Also, enhancing the annatto color content on standing crop is the need of the day as they are of perennial in nature and will pay much return. In this regard, we had developed an elicitor mediated technology to improve the annatto color production by approximately three folds on standing crop using biotic elicitors viz., R. oligosporus and A. niger, which is highly useful to meet the nearest international benchmark for world trade.
