Abstract
Cymbopogon essential oils have proven effective as biopesticides used alone or alongside other agents against diverse targets, including agricultural and stored grain pests, fungi, viruses, household pests, and blood-feeding insects. They can be applied in multiple forms, such as fumigants, direct sprays, or granular formulations. Key benefits include environmental safety, low impact on non-target species, fast-acting properties, and alignment with sustainable farming practices. Additionally, they can be adapted to diverse environmental conditions. Cymbopogon essential oils offer a promising alternative to chemical pesticides. Biotechnological advancements can help scale up their use, and slow or extended-release formulations—such as gels, oil mixtures, or Nano formulations—further enhance their potential. The industrial and economic benefits of Cymbopogon species for small, medium, and large-scale farmers and entrepreneurs could significantly contribute to national growth. This review summarizes current research on the application of Cymbopogon essential oils as biopesticides and ad- dresses challenges associated with their use.
