Abstract
The corrosion behaviour of tinplate of various Sn coating thicknesses (0.25-1.0 lb/base box) and 2 different grain size structures with (i) Badami mango nectar and (ii) Coorg mandarin orange juice, both 15 degree Brix and 0.5% acidity, was studied using a polarisation technique. Badami mango pulp was fractionated, and the corrosion caused was shown to decrease in the following order of environment: organic acid, sugar • organic acid, amino acid, and sugar. The corrosive activity of pure organic acids decreased in the order: oxalic, citric, succinic, citric • malic • succinic, and malic. Corrosion resistance to (i) and (ii) increased with increasing wt. of Sn coating, and also with larger grain size of Sn coating. The agreement of polarization data with direct corrosion tests indicates that the method can be used for rapid qualitative evaluation of tinplate for different food products.
