Abstract

Pestcides are presenlly being used in increasing amounts in the fields of food production, preservation and control of vectors of disease~ of man and livestock, All these chemicals arf" loxic in naTure and their residues on foods result in chronic toxicity hazards which involve the whole of living beings all over the globe. The majority of poopIe in India, South East Asian countries, Africa and South America are chronically underfed both in quantity and quality and also subjected to various stress conditions, and these factors are likely to influence the toxicity of pesticide residues 10 the consumers. The present article deals with subjects - pesticide residues in man, etc., phannacological and biochemical studies on pesticide residues, toxicity of a chemical as influenced by diet, influence of diet on liver condition and conclusions. There are no mathematical means by which one can arrive at a tolerance level of pesticides to suit people subjected to different stress conditions and so, precaution should be exercised in the application of pesticides especially in countries where malnourishment is widely prevalent.
