Abstract
The primary function of dietary protein in humans is to furnish the
aminoacids required, for the synthesis of tissue proteins and also of other
nitrogenous constituents essential to the organism. A large amount of
work has been carried out by various workers on the protein and amino
acid requirements of humans. 1,2 The present review deals with the following
aspects of the problem: (I) Rate of accretion of protein in the
body during growth and calculated minimum protein requirements. (2) The
aminoacid requirements and aminoacid patterns (3) Aminoacid composisition
of human tissues and animal tissues as compared to estimated amino-
acid requirements. (4) Metabolism and retention of dietary protein.
(5) Factors affecting the retention of dietary proteins. (6) Dietary protein
requirements.
