Abstract

A titrimetric method for detn. of cinnamaldehyde in cinnamon and cassia oils is described, based on the quantitative reaction of the aldehyde with semicarbazide hydrochloride, forming the semicarbazone, which is removed, and excess unreacted semicarbazide is determined iodometrically using chloramine-T. This method generally gives lower values than the standard hydroxylamine hydrochloride method, i.e. in imported commercial cinnamon bark oil the new method gave results of 29.43-70.25% vs. 30.74-72.26 by the standard method; correspondingly Indian commercial samples gave 18.11-59.75% vs. 20.73-68.57; cassia bark oil contained 79.38 vs. 84.36%; cinnamon leaf oil contained 2.08-3.53% vs. 2.20-3.59.
