Effect of orchard elevation on maturity and quality of apples.

Abstract
The influence of orchard elevation [1675, 2270 and 2590 m above sea level] on maturity and quality of Royal Delicious and Red Delicious apples was studied in 2 consecutive yr (1975 and 1976). Fruit harvested at weekly intervals, 100-150 days after full bloom, were examined for starch disappearance and seed color to assess maturity. Fruit harvested at optimum harvest maturity in the 2nd season and stored at low temp. were evaluated after 2 wk and 4 months storage. A starch pattern index and seed color index were developed and these, considered together with days of maturity, defined different stages of maturity more accurately. Orchard elevation showed a significant influence on the number of days required for optimum harvest maturity, as fruit attained maturity after 125 days at low elevation vs. 140 days at high elevation. High elevation fruit had significantly better color, appearance, texture and juiciness, but poorer aroma and taste than low elevation fruit. Harvesting fruit at 125-145 days at low elevation and 140-170 days at high elevation is recommended for better keeping quality during storage.
