Abstract

The ability of Aspergillus niger (5 strains), Penicillium chrysogenum (ST-F-38), Pastalotia sp. and a Basidiomycete to produce protein on alkali treated (i) rice straw, (ii) bagasse and (iii) groundnut shells was investigated. The protein production (mg/g of substrate dry wt. basis) varied from 22.7-72.56, 16.77-72.91 and 23.74-41.05 from (i), (ii) and (iii) resp. As the max. protein was produced by Asp. niger on (i) it was further studied with varying levels of pH and substrate concn. Within the initial pH range of 3.5 to 6.6 at 1% (wt./vol.) substrate level, max. protein (85 mg/g substrate) was produced after 62 h incubation in a rotary shaker.
