Abstract
The effect of supplementation with the alga Scendesmus actus on the protein nutritional value of (i) rice, (ii) ragi (Eleusine coracana), (iii) wheat and (iv) groundnuts was studied in rat feeding trials. Diets in which the dried alga provided 25% or 50% of the protein were used. Tables of results are given. The results show that supplementation with algae significantly improved the protein efficiency ratio of (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv); the improvement in PER was greater with (ii) and (iii) than with (i). A 1:1:1 blend of (i), (iii) and algae gave the highest PER of any of the diets tested. The results are discussed in relation to use of Sc. acutus as a food supplement in India.
