Abstract
Selection of Lactobacillus strains as potential probiotic microorganisms requires knowledge of their ability to survive in environmental conditions similar to those found in the human gut. In this study, survival of L. acidophilus strains 301 (antagonistic against enteric pathogens) and 1899 (able to induce hypocholesterolaemic activity) at acidic pH and in the presence of bile salts, and their adherence to vero cells, were investigated. Lactic broth (10 ml) with and without 0.3% bile salt or adjusted to pH 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 or 5.0 was inoculated with 0.1 ml of the test cultures and incubated for 16 h at 37
