Abstract
Details are given of studies in which 5 traditionally extracted oils and 1 industrially extracted oil were evaluated as protectants against attacks by Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) on stored cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) and Bambara groundnuts (Vigna subterranea (Voandzeia subterranea)). On cowpea, only neem kernel oil (from kernels of Azadirachta indica) reduced oviposition (at 8 ml oil/kg seed). On Bambarra groundnuts, neem kernel oil, palm oil and groundnut oil (industrially extracted) reduced oviposition at 3 ml/kg, and karite oil (extracted from the fruits of the tree Butyrospermum parkii) was effective at 5 ml/kg. The ovicidal action was higher on Bambara groundnuts than on cowpeas for all the oils. Only neem oil showed larvicidal properties. Even after storage for 90 days, the cowpea testa retained most of its toxic activity. Good protection of cowpea was afforded for 3 months by neem oil at 8 ml/kg and of Bambara groundnuts for 6 months at 5 ml/kg.
