Abstract

For 7 weeks, 6 X 6 male albino Wistar rats (60 to 70 g) were given to appetite a stock diet (control), or that diet with cholesterol 1% and bile salts 0.15% (ChD) without or with oryzanol, isolated from rice bran oil, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0%, respectively. Oryzanol did not decrease serum cholesterol in rats given a cholesterol diet for 3 weeks, but decreased it significantly after 5 weeks. After 7 weeks, total serum cholesterol, free, esterified and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides decreased significantly in rats given 0.5% oryzanol. In the group given ChD, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentrations decreased significantly, compared with control. Supplementing ChD with oryzanol did not influence HDL cholesterol concentrations; increase in LDL in cholesterol diets decreased significantly in rats given supplementary oryzanol and resulted in an increased HDL percentage. Serum phospholipid concentrations did not change. Liver total cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipids decreased significantly in rats given 0.5% oryzanol.
