Abstract

Female Wistar rats weighing 138 g initially were given a diet with 18% lactalbumin freely, a diet with 1% lactalbumin restricted to 4 g daily or a diet with 0.5% lactalbumin freely for 70 days. Final bodyweight was 204, 84 and 89 g, respectively, haematocrit 37.6, 29.5 and 25.7 and haemoglobin 13.1, 9.9 and 7.6 g/100 ml blood. Adenosine deaminase (EC 3.5.4.4) activity in leucocytes was significantly decreased in rats of both deprived groups. The significance of decreased adenosine deaminase activity is discussed in relation to its effects on lymphocytes and decreased cell-mediated immune response.
