Additional Information: | A study was conducted to determine appropriate simulant and test conditions for migration testing of fatty foods. Migration values of all polymer films were found to be within the tolerance limits at lower temperature but they are more than the prescribed limits at higher temperature conditions as per US-FDA specifications and also as per IS. Overall Migration study of HDPE and PET film in three simulants shows that the maximum amount of additive migration is in 95% ethanol followed by Isooctane, migration value was found minimum in n-heptane. While for LDPE maximum migration was in Iso-octanr followed by 95% ethanol and n-heptane. The amount of migration increases with rise in temperature and time period which is as expected. Additives identified by FT-IR in extractive of films were different; it shows difference in migration behavior of additives with different simulants. In LDPE, Irganox1076 was present in the extractives obtained in all three simulants. The migration values ranged from a minimum of 0.143 mg/dm2 in n- Heptane to a maximum of 5.155 mg/dm2 in Iso-octane. For HDPE, Irganox 1010 was present in extractive obtained in n-heptane and Iso-octane while Chimossorb 944 in 95% ethanol. The migration values ranged from a minimum of 0.096 mg/dm2 in n-Heptane to a maximum of 4.24 mg/dm2 in 95% ethanol. For PET, Irganox 1076 was present in extractive obtained in n-heptane and Isooctane while Irgafos 168 in 95% ethanol. The migration values ranged from a minimum of 0.046 mg/dm2 in n-Heptane to a maximum of 5.685 mg/dm2 in 95% ethanol. Olive oil is generally used as the simulant for fatty foods. Migration testing in olive oil is not only imprecise but also very time consuming and therefore expensive. Hence from this study, Iso-octane and n-Heptane can be used as alternative simulant for fatty food simulant and further study is required to use 95% ethanol as an alternative simulant. |
