Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: The use of antimicrobial agents in food and food products have been debated in the public domain for decades. These have encouraged the food industry to look for an alternative agents and combinations. It is imperative that the beneficial or medicinal effects of several plants be subjected to scientific testing and active principle isolated. Decalepis hamiltonii is one such plant whose beneficial effects have not been subjected to scientific investigation till the last decade. CFTRI has undertaken study on several aspects of the potential of the roots of D. hamiltonii. The present study is aimed at finding the antifungal activity of the fraction against stored grain fungi and isolation of the active fraction from hexane extract of roots of Decalepis hamiltonii. the extract was fractionated and later sub fractionated by column chromatography ,observed by TLC for impurities and absorbance measured in spectrophotometer. Series of studies conducted using different concentration of fraction in agar well diffusion method, liquid broth, mycelial growth and spore germination. It is hoped that the results obtained from this work will give a sound scientific basis for natural antimicrobial activity of D.hamiltonii and reduce the risk of potential use of synthetic fungicidal compounds in pest management.
