Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Antibacterial activity of the Dillenia indica fruit and bark extracts was studied using growth inhibition at different concentrations of the extracts. The extracts from the bark and fruit rinds of Dillenia indica showed antibacterial activity against the two major foodborne pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. However, the bark extract was found to be the most effective against growth of the two foodborne pathogens studied. Membrane expansion was observed in the liposomal vesicle and bacterial membranes in the presence of the fruit and bark extracts of Dillenia indica. The decrease of nucleic acid content of the bacteria was observed when treated with the fruit and bark extracts. Free oxygen content in the solution increased with the increase of the concentrations of the fruit and bark extracts in E. coli and S. aureus. Results showed that the extracts from the bark and fruit of Dillenia indica possess antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogens. This antibacterial activity may probably attribute to expansion of cell membrane, inhibition of metabolic activity and by degradation of nuclear materials.
