Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information:
Increased food safety awareness among consumers offers new challenge to control the spoilage and pathogenic organisms in food. The detection of pathogenic organisms in food is of great importance to ensure well being of human kind. World Health Organization also emphasizes on more systemic and aggressive approach to significantly reduce the risk of microbiological food borne diseases. Worldwide Staphylococcus aureus has been ranked second as a causative agent of common types of food poisoning. In India, reports of foodborne disease outbreaks by S.aureus are scanty.A total of 84 different native isolates of staphylococci were selected from different street food samples. Based on Bergy’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology, these isolates were identified to species level. Nearly48% of the isolates were identified as S. xylosus, 14% as S. aureus, 11% as S.epidermides, 8% as S. cohinii sub sp 2, 7% as S.haemolyticus and the remaining isolates belonged to other Staphylococcus groups. These results clearly showed that S. xylosus and S. aureus were predominant among the different isolates in street foods.
