Abstract

As in other fruits and vegetables, the stage of maturity at the time .of cold storage is of considerable importance in the case of mangoes also. With regard to the optimum temperature for the cold storage of mangoes, Cheema, Karmarkar and Joshi (1) have concluded that green fruit is chilled below 45°F and that 48°F is the optimum temperature for storage of this fruit. According to .ardlaw and Leonard (2) the optimum temperature for the cold storage of mangoes is 45°F. Mathur, Singh and Kapur (3, 4) have shown that with a relative humidity of 85-90 per cent, the temperatures of storage and the maximum storage periods are as follows: (i) Seedling mangoes, 42-45°F; 42 days. (ii) Raspuri mangoes, 42-45°F; 42 days and (iii) Badami mangoes, 47-50°F; 28 days. Singh and Mathur (5) have recommended a temperature of 67-70°F as the optimum for the ripening of mangoes. In the case of Krishnabhog and Langra varieties, Singh, Sheshagiri and Gupta (6) observed a climacteric rise in the respiratory rate with the commencement of ripening. Karmarkar and Joshi (7) found that the respiratory activity of the green fruit of 'B' stage of maturity stored at 68°F increased idually, reached the climacteric and then uecreased during ripening. The cold storage behaviour of the `Totapuri' (Bangalora) thango is dealt with in the present paper.
