Abstract

Banganapally and Dusheri, 2 important commercial varieties of mango, were subjected to large-scale rail shipment trials in ventilated wooden wagons. Effect of different types of packages, cushioning materials and of pretreatment with wax emulsion containing fungicides was tested. Ventilated wooden wagons were found to prevent excessive increase of temp. during transit. Ventilated wooden cases with paper shavings as cushioning material were better than the conventional bamboo or arhar twig (Cajanus) baskets for both varieties of mango. For internal trade within India, waxing was not advantageous, but would be useful in preventing spoilage during longer journeys.
